Heirloom or Non Hybrid Garden Seeds for Survival Gardening?

March 10th, 2011

Heirloom seeds are a must for survival gardening or even just to store up for future use or for emergency use.

Survival is not always about what is happening right now, the immediate danger that we must overcome or even the 72 hours that we must survive after a disaster. It can also be about the long term survival that we might have to endure; being prepared to live of the land and reinvent ourselves as providers from things we grow and produce from our immediate surroundings. Survival gardening is something that should be considered when you are stocking up your survival gear.

Choosing the right survival seeds to keep in your store is as important as any other survival gear you might already have stored up. It doesn’t matter if you have gardening experience or not you will have to learn and quickly in the event of a crisis.

The average food distribution chain for supermarkets is 3 days; that basically means if the chain is broken for more than 3 days then the shelves will be empty and it does not take much, especially when people start panic buying.

There is a certain type of survival seed that you need in your seed bank, heirloom seeds or non hybrid seeds are what you need to buy. The reason is that organic seeds such as non hybrid seeds allow the farmer to collect a fresh patch of seeds each harvest ready to plant for the next.

Hybrid seeds or genetically modified seeds do not produce new seeds, so once you have planted them that would be it, no more seeds. You would need a continuous supply of seeds to keep your survival garden stocked, or inevitably you will run out.

When planning your survival gardening you will only need to collect enough heirloom garden seeds to last 3 harvests; one set to plant, a set in case the first is whipped out and a back up emergency seed bank. Don’t forget you will have a fresh batch of seeds equally as good as the first with every harvest.

Purchasing vacuum packed non hybrid, heirloom seeds is the answer to your survival garden needs. They will last for as long as you need them and supply you with endless amounts of food if necessary year after year. Getting your seed bank ready and your survival garden planned is a step in the right direction for any survivalist. You never know when a food crisis will strike or how long it will last, be prepared and be a survivor.
